Types of Power Outages

What causes power outages? Often, outages are due to severe weather. Lightning, high winds, and extreme temperatures are all common factors. Sometimes, your power company can repair a line and get you up and running within a few hours. Other times, repairs may take days.

Blackout

A blackout is the most severe type of outage, involving the total loss of power to an area. Common causes include lightning strikes, snow storms, and other weather events. If snow, hail, or rainstorms persist, repairs could take days or weeks, depending on the extent of the damage.

Brownout

If power is reduced but not totally cut off, you could be in a brownout. As the name suggests, it’s less severe than a blackout, with dimming lights and voltage drops. Though power is not totally lost, brownouts can still produce dangerous surges that damage electrical equipment. If your power is browning out, you should turn it off at the breaker.

Rolling Blackout

A rolling blackout, also called a rotating outage, is an intentional electrical power shutdown performed in an emergency situation. Power grid operators use rolling blackouts to balance the supply and demand of electricity. By strategically planning outages, they can help prevent longer blackouts.

Preparing Your Home for Power Outages

Protecting your family and home during a power outage is all about preparation. Our licensed and insured electricians can help you weather any storm with surge protector installation, backup generator installation, and 24-hour emergency services.

Surge Protectors

During an outage, power surges often occur. These may result in lost data, equipment failure, and damaged appliances. A surge protector safeguards your home’s electrical operations by diverting the excess current into the grounding line. Thomas Edison installs both point-of-use and whole-house surge protectors.

Backup Generators

Increasingly severe weather and growing demand can cause more frequent power outages. But a backup generator can keep your house warm, your family safe, and your food refrigerated. Our electricians specialize in backup generator installation to keep your appliances, alarms, and lighting going strong in an emergency.

Emergency Kit

A power outage emergency kit can make a bad situation bearable. Ensure your kit is accessible and everyone in your family knows its location.

A good power outage emergency kit includes the following:

  • Flashlights and fresh batteries

  • Portable phone batteries

  • Can opener

  • Whistle

  • Emergency radio

  • Non-perishable food and bottled water

  • First aid kit

  • Sleeping bags and blankets
